Sports News – NBA news: All-Defensive Team announced

NBA news: All-Defensive Team announced

The NBA announced its First and Second All-Defensive Teams Monday and, not surprisingly, Dwight Howard led the charge.

Howard, winner of the last three Defensive Player of the Year awards, received the most First-Team votes. Joining him on the First Team: Kevin Garnett and LeBron James at forward and Kobe Bryant and Rajon Rondo at guard. Garnett and Bryant tied Michael Jordan and Gary Payton’s record with their ninth First-Team selections.

Making the Second Team were Tyson Chandler at center, Joakim Noah and Andre Iguodala at forward, and Tony Allen and Chris Paul at guard.

MLB news: Vernon Wells hits DL; Josh Willingham suspended; Season-ending surgery for two Met pitchers?

A strained groin is set to put $23-million man Vernon Wells and the Los Angeles Angels out of their misery. Wells has been placed on the 15-day DL. The 32-year-old is hitting .183 with four homers and 13 RBI this season. He is the second-highest paid player in Major League Baseball, trailing only Alex Rodriguez.

Oakland Athletics outfielder Josh Willingham has been suspended one game by Major League Baseball for making contact with an umpire. He bumped umpire Bill Miller while arguing a called third strike during the eighth inning of Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

Two New York Met pitchers appear set to go under the knife for serious injuries. Top prospect Jenrry Meija will undergo Tommy John Surgery, as expected, and will miss at least one year. Constantly banged-up Chris Young may require season-ending surgery to repair a tear in the anterior capsule of his right (throwing) shoulder. He hasn’t decided yet if he wants surgery or a lengthy rehab program.

NHL news: Clowe, Franzen out for Game 6

As the Detroit Red Wings try to push the San Jose Sharks to a Game 7 tonight, both sides will be missing key power forwards. Detroit won’t have Johan Franzen; the Mule is out with an ankle injury. He’ll be replaced by future Hall-of-Famer Mike Modano, who will make his 2011 playoff debut.

The Sharks won’t have their leading scorer in these playoffs, Ryan Clowe. The big winner is out with an undisclosed injury, He leads San Jose with 13 points

NFL news: 38 per cent of players wear lowest safety-rated helmets; Chargers “monitoring” Steve Smith; Magee arrested for pot possession

According to a Virginia Tech study, 38 per cent of NFL players are currently wearing the most unsafe helmet, the Riddell VSR4. That helmet has a one-star safety rating. The only helmet to receive a five-star rating was the Riddell Revolution Speed; 39 per cent of players wear it.

Could the San Diego Chargers and Steve Smith be a match made in heaven? The former superstar wideout hasn’t done much in Carolina with his limited quarterback options in recent seasons. However, the Chargers are reportedly “monitoring” Smith as a possible new target for Philip Rivers. The Panthers haven’t released him but could make him available for a second-day pick.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Alex Magee was cited for marijuana possession yesterday. Tampa police pulled him over for driving with an expired tag before noticing the odor. He was released and issued a court date for a misdemeanor charge.
